Here's my dad, John kelly.
He's not just my father, he's also a son, brother, grandfather, and uncle - he's a busy man!!
Its a rare photograph, I took it whilst we were in New York in December 2013, its rare because my dad doesn't really enjoy having his picture taken. When we were growing up if ever photographs were being taken it was by my dad, he'd take shots of us (my mum, sister and I), I guess the main reason was to capture the moment and preserve the memories, as most people do with family photographs. But that meant that dad wasn't in many of them. Over the years we've got the odd snap on the camera or, more often now, the camera phones, but still the focus has been on everyone else such as his grandchildren.
All this actually does show a bit of my dad's character; he wants everyone to have a good time, to enjoy life, and he enjoys seeing us all smiling and being happy. He doesn't want the limelight or to be the centre of attention, just for us all to have the best lives we could possibly have.
He always goes the extra mile to give us everything we could have wished for, I've never gone without anything. He's worked damn hard to ensure that mum could be at home with us when we were growing up and then every weekend trying to take us somewhere fun or educational. Holidays were always the best and we've been to some wonderful parts of the world, eaten amazing food and met some brilliant people. He's the most selfless person I know giving up his time for anyone else who needs help, he's been there with all of my really tough times and made sure that I keep positive and look forward.
As I edge nearer becoming a father myself I am finding myself a mix of less fear and more excitement. There's loads I don't know and that I might even get wrong bringing up my little one, but as far as I am concerned, if I can become anything close to the father to my child that my dad has been to me then I will have succeeded in parenting!
Happy Father's Day!!
